A good itinerary makes half the trip easy. Rather than listing dozens of sights first, decide the pace of your trip, then fill it in. These seven steps work for most independent trips.
Step 1: Decide what this trip is for
- Who’s coming? Seniors, kids, friends and couples all move at different speeds.
- Relaxing, eating, photos or culture? Rank your top three priorities.
- What are your limits on budget and days? Set the big picture, then fine-tune.
Step 2: Plan by area, not by sight
- Group sights by location and focus on one or two areas a day to avoid backtracking.
- Place your 1–2 must-sees first, then fill gaps with nearby smaller sights.
- Count travel time: a day that changes cities usually leaves only half a day to explore.
Step 3: Leave flexible time every day
- Plan 2–4 key things a day — don’t cram.
- Take an hour after lunch for rest or coffee and you’ll be fresher in the afternoon.
- Have an indoor backup for bad weather (museum, mall, food hall).
Step 4: Lock in what needs booking
- Observation decks, theme parks, popular restaurants and timed-entry sights often need reservations.
- Fix those dates and times first, then build everything else around them.
- Keep booking references and times in your trip cards — no inbox digging on the day.
Step 5: Think about transport and hotels together
- Staying near a transport hub or sightseeing cluster saves hours of travel.
- With big luggage, change hotels as little as possible.
- Keep arrival and departure days light in case of delays.
Step 6: Put restaurants into the plan
- Check opening hours and closing days, and note a backup.
- Famous places have queues — go off-peak or book.
- Choose lunch and dinner spots along the day’s route.
Step 7: Make a shareable version
- Once it’s settled, export as a PDF, long image or text and send it to your travel buddies.
- In JoinTrip you can export in one tap and keep key info (bookings, emergency contacts) in note cards.
