The three layers
- Base layer: moisture-wicking or thermal, close-fitting and quick-dry.
- Mid layer: insulation, such as light fleece or knitwear.
- Outer layer: a windproof, waterproof jacket.
Checking the weather
- Check the forecast a week before and again the day before.
- Our Tools → Climate page shows monthly average temperatures (typical values).
- Mountains, coasts and cities can differ a lot — pack an extra layer for multi-area trips.
Rainy-day plan
- Mark one indoor backup (museum, mall) for each day.
- A compact umbrella plus waterproof shoe covers.
- Pack in waterproof bags and protect electronics first.
